I have scanned in several photos that either my wife, Jane, a friend, Terry
Beaumier and I took on 22 February 1994, just 5 days after the 6.8
Northridge/Reseda earthquake. I thought there would be many people who
would like to see photos of some of the destruction other than what you can
get out of the media. I scanned them on a Sun (ugh!) and saved them at the
highest quality JPEG allows (it was the only format that the software had
in common with the Mac). I decided to sample them at 150 dpi in order to
keep the images large enough to show good detail but also small enough to
make it worth the download time. All the images are less than 700 Kb (15
in all), but I have compressed those of the same site into one ".sea" file
to keep them together and save download time. There are 7 sets of photos
in this series. I hope others will also post some of their photos--I have
seen some really dramatic and disturbing shots.

Photo Names: Car Crunch 1-3
Location: Apartment complex at Victory & Tampa
(south-ish side of the San Fernando Valley)
************************************************************************
This three story apartment complex is now totally condemned.
Photos 1-2: The worst damage occurred to the entire back row of apartments
bordering the wash when the supports in the lower floor's car port buckled.
As you can see many cars were crushed by the other two floors when the
whole row of apartments tilted toward the wash. I was told that the
apartment in the middle burned down (the one that looks like it was totally
torn apart), but I couldn't see any signs of fire from my vantage point.
Photo 3: This is of the side wall where the apartments detached from the
rest of the complex (between the two tall trees). If you were to look
through the giant rip in the wall, you would see that the front room was
ripped in two just 6 inches from where a baby stroller stood (I kid you
not!) and 6 feet from a baby swing near the rear wall. If the tenants did
not escape through a window near the ground, they would have had to climb
up a steep incline and climb down the three story high rubble to get out.
I have no idea who the person in the photo is.

Photo Names: CSUN Parking 1-3
Location: Parking structure at CSUN (Cal State Univ Northridge)
************************************************************************
The parking structure at CSUN folded in on itself in the original quake, as
these photos show. A 5.x aftershock later caused it to collapse even
further. Notice how the concrete supports were bent like rubber.

Photo Names: Old Federal Building
Location: Sherman Way & Lindly

Photo says it all (i.e., I know nothing other than what you can see in the
picture).

Photo Names: Mall Parking 1-3
Location: New parking structure at Northridge Mall
************************************************************************
Several shots of the relatively new multi-story parking structure at the
Northridge Mall. A man was trapped in this rubble while in his street
sweeper. They have since torn ALL of the mall's parking structures down--5
in all I think. I don't know who the man in the photo is.
************************************************************************
Photo Names: Northridge Meadows 1-2
Location: 9565 (?) Reseda Blvd.
************************************************************************
These are probably the most disturbing photos I have--the Northridge
Meadows apartments where so many people were crushed.
Photo 1: The building on the left used to be exactly the same as the one on
the right. The one on the left fell to the right (northward) about 10
feet, completely collapsing the first story. As you can see, you can't
even tell that this building used to be 3 stories high.
Photo 2: The side of the fallen building.

Photo Names: Town House 1-3
Location: Zelzah near CSUN parking structure
************************************************************************
This was a really nice 3 story townhouse complex. Again it shows how
having a car port/garage in a multi-story building weakens the structure.
Photo 1: I don't know how these people got out of their houses after the
quake--ALL the stairs to the upper floor detatched and fell away.
Photo 2: The side of the building. Notice the pink panther.
Photo 3: Once again, the building on the left was exactly the same as the
one on the right. The garages collapsed, tilting the rest of the house.
The building to the right was not just one row of townhouses, but rather
four rows of townhomes connected together like the sides of a
square/rectangle (I think).

Photo Names: Warner Center 1
Location: Parking structure in Warner Center
************************************************************************
This is a photo of the multi-story parking structure behind the Cheesecake
Factory in Warner Center. The structure is in use again, but they are
rebuilding the stairwell.
